However, the following guidelines should be considered when using the cold spray process and equipment.
Personal Protective Equipment
The type and scope of the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) should be in direct correlation to the type of hazards that exist at the site of the application. For detailed information, please consult OSHA 1910 and check the requirements of blasting applications and other applicable codes or standards.
For most manual spraying applications in open air, the following PPE items are recommended in addition to standard safety equipment:
- Adequate eye protection, to prevent exposure of the eyes against dust, flying objects, and particles
- Adequate respiratory protection, if powder or dust contamination is present
- Appropriate gloves and clothing, to protect against cuts, abrasions, and contact with the powder
Since the cold spray process requires significant energy to be transmitted by the sprayed particles to the substrate, that means that reflected particles do not have sufficient velocity to stick to the workpiece. In such situations, over-spraying is simply not an issue and masking is more commonly used to help contain the dust and reduce the clean-up effort. In this regard, the normal practices used with other blasting processes such as sandblasting will work just fine.
In some cases, masking can be used to protect areas of the workpiece or nearby objects from the potential damage of direct exposure to the spray jet. Masking may also be used to create desirable effects. For example, the masking material can be shaped to create edging effects, and stencils can be made.

The Cold Spray process applies homogeneous high-density coatings; therefore, the applied coating can be handled very similarly to their metal equivalents. The coatings can be polished, filed, sanded, ground, drilled, or machined, although in some cases the sprayed material may be more difficult to finish due to its hardness.
One of the unique aspects of the process is that SST equipment can spray composite material coatings that have a variety of beneficial properties. For example, aluminum or zinc surfaces may smear when filed or sanded, SST can add another material to the powder blend to help alleviate this problem.
