The High-Pressure
Cold Gas-Dynamic Spray Process
In the high-pressure
process, a pressurized powder feeder forces spray feedstock into
a flow of carrier gas before passing through a DeLaval
(converging-diverging) nozzle to form the powder-laden jet.
The spray feedstock
powders are typical of those used in HVOF but custom tailored
powders are also available. The carrier gas has traditionally
been helium but newer systems utilize nitrogen to greatly reduce
the gas cost. This gas is maintained at pressure above 30 bar
and temperature of up to 900oC.
The high velocities of
this process make it capable of spraying some materials not
possible with low-pressure cold gas-dynamic spray. And the
deposition efficiency tends to also be higher – approaching 95%.
Equipment for this
process is manufactured by CGT – Cold Gas Technology GmbH in
Ampfing, Germany. Their KINETIKS® line of equipment is available
in the US from ASB Industries of Barberton, Ohio.
